Avoid lengthy wait times and restore clear vision
Cataracts are a common age-related condition that can gradually make everyday life more difficult. When the lens of the eye becomes cloudy it can lead to blurred vision, sensitivity to light and difficulty reading or driving, which can dramatically impact quality of life.
While cataract surgery is a routine and highly successful procedure, many patients in South Wales and surrounding areas can face long waiting times before accessing treatment. For those who want faster access to a cataract hospital, choosing private treatment can provide a reassuring and efficient alternative; delivered in Wales’ only dedicated eye-hospital with accessible, state-of-the-art facilities.

How Does A Cataract Consultation Work?
At Sana Private Health, patients in South Wales can access cataract surgery quickly and conveniently at specialist eye hospitals in Swansea and Bridgend. By choosing to go private, patients can avoid lengthy waiting lists and receive treatment from leading Ophthalmology consultants without unnecessary delays.
The process begins with a comprehensive consultation where our expert consultant ophthalmologists assess the patient’s vision and confirm whether cataract surgery is the most appropriate treatment. At Sana Private Health, this consultation is carried out using advanced diagnostic technology in modern, purpose-built facilities designed specifically for eye care.
What Happens After My Cataract Consultation?
At Sana, we typically do not carry out surgery on the same day as your initial consultation. This gives you time to fully digest the information, consider your options, and make a confident and informed decision. We’ll be pleased to welcome you back with open arms when you’re ready to proceed, and in most cases we recommend allowing at least 48 hours after your consultation to make sure you’ve had sufficient time to decide on what’s right for you.
If surgery is recommended, the procedure itself is typically straightforward and takes around 30 minutes. During cataract surgery, the cloudy lens inside the eye is carefully removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens, helping to restore sharp vision. Patients are awake during the procedure but the eye is numbed with anaesthetic drops, meaning the surgery is painless and recovery is usually quick.
How Long Does Recovery Take?
On the day of surgery patients are usually able to return home after just an hour or so of recuperation, spent with a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit in our post-surgery recovery lounge. Our clinical teams won’t rush you to get home, and will let you recuperate for as long as you like before discharging you in your own time.
You will not be able to drive home after surgery, and so a friend, family member or taxi driver will need to be arranged to collect you. Our friendly receptionist team can arrange a taxi for you if this is needed, ensuring you are safely sent home. Follow-up appointments are then arranged to ensure healing is progressing as expected and that vision is improving.
Most patients can resume driving within a few days after surgery, and many find they can greatly reduce reliance on their glasses after the recovery period which is usually between 4 – 6 weeks. Some can give up their glasses altogether.
What Are My Payment Options?
Concerned about the cost? Sana Private Health offers flexible payment options, and we’re recognised by most major insurers.
And for patients considering treatment this spring, there is an added benefit: throughout March 2026, we are offering a promotion. The initial consultation is free when booked during March and the patient proceeds with treatment at Sana. See this link for full terms and conditions.
For anyone whose vision is being affected by cataracts, choosing private treatment with Sana Private Health can provide peace of mind, rapid access to expert care and the opportunity to regain clearer sight without the long wait.
