What are the hand condition we treat at Sana?

Dupuytrens

Dupuytren’s disease is a condition where scar-like tissue forms just beneath the skin of your fingers and the palm of your hand. Over time, this fibrous tissue can contract and force one or more fingers to curl up into the palm. This is known as Dupuytren’s contracture.

Carpal Tunnel

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition where there is increased pressure on a nerve that crosses the front of your wrist (the median nerve).

The median nerve runs through a tight tunnel on the front of your wrist, together with the tendons that bend your fingers.

If the tunnel becomes too tight it can cause pressure on the nerve, usually resulting in pain or numbness in the thumb, index and middle fingers.

Ulnar nerve decompression

Ulnar nerve decompression is surgical procedure designed to explore the region around the elbow through which the ulnar nerve passes. The ulnar nerve is responsible for the 'funny bone' phenomenon when you hit your elbow.

Tendon repair
(extensor or flexor)

Hand tendon repair is needed when 1 or more tendons in your hand rupture (break or split) or are cut, leading to the loss of normal hand movements.

If your extensor tendons are damaged, you'll be unable to straighten 1 or more fingers. If your flexor tendons are damaged, you'll be unable to bend 1 or more fingers.

Tendon damage can also cause pain and swelling (inflammation) in your hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome often causes tingling, numbness, or a “pins and needles” sensation in your fingers - especially the thumb, index, and middle fingers. You may also experience weakness or pain in your hand or wrist, especially when gripping objects.

  • Yes, carpal tunnel syndrome can return, particularly if the underlying causes - like repetitive hand movements or wrist strain - aren’t addressed. However, treatment such as surgery usually provides long-term relief.

  • Without treatment, symptoms can persist or worsen over time. With early intervention, such as splinting or steroid injections, symptoms may improve within weeks. If surgery is needed, most patients see improvement within a few weeks to months.

  • Symptoms often worsen at night because most people sleep with their wrists bent, increasing pressure on the median nerve. This can lead to numbness, tingling, or pain that may even wake you up.

What to expect

Consultation

Once you have been seen by the consultant, they will assess your treatment and determine a price. The price can vary depending on what is required to help you.

During the treatment

Surgery will take place withinone of our two theatres and most surgeries take approximately one hour from start to finish. You will receive a local anaesthetic which will mean you are awake for the procedure.

After
Treatment

Once the procedure is complete, you may go home quite quickly following the procedure once we are happy you are fit to do so. It is important to ensure you have somebody to take you home and do not attempt to drive.
