Understanding  Cataracts

Most people have heard of cataracts. One of the biggest misconceptions about cataracts is that they only affect older people. While the majority of cases do occur in people over the age of 65, they can start to form in people who are younger.

The good news is that private cataract surgery is an effective treatment, regardless of your age.

What are Cataracts?

A cataract is something that forms inside the lens of your eye. The lens is the clear disc that sits behind your pupil and is responsible for focusing the light rays entering your eye onto the retina the area of light-sensitive cells that send light to your brain to convert it into images.

The lens contains proteins which are usually evenly dispersed so that light can pass through. However, as you get older these proteins clump together, causing cloudy patches that prevent light from penetrating through them and affecting your vision.

These cloudy patches are known as cataracts.

Cataract surgery is a day-case procedure that typically takes less than an hour. You’ll go home the same day — no overnight stay needed.
